RESUMEN

Many animal species rely on the Earth's magnetic field during navigation, but where in the brain magnetic information is processed is still unknown. To unravel this, we manipulated the natural magnetic field at the nest entrance of Cataglyphis desert ants and investigated how this affects relevant brain regions during early compass calibration. We found that manipulating the Earth's magnetic field has profound effects on neuronal plasticity in two sensory integration centers. Magnetic field manipulations interfere with a typical look-back behavior during learning walks of naive ants. Most importantly, structural analyses in the ants' neuronal compass (central complex) and memory centers (mushroom bodies) demonstrate that magnetic information affects neuronal plasticity during early visual learning. This suggests that magnetic information does not only serve as a compass cue for navigation but also as a global reference system crucial for spatial memory formation. We propose a neural circuit for integration of magnetic information into visual guidance networks in the ant brain. Taken together, our results provide an insight into the neural substrate for magnetic navigation in insects.

Magneto-transport measurements on gated high-mobility heterostructures containing a 60 nm layer of tensile-strained HgTe, a three-dimensional topological insulator, show well-developed Hall quantization from surface states both in the n- as well as in the p-type regime. While the n-type behavior is due to transport in the topological surface state of the material, we find from 8-orbital k·p calculations that the p-type transport results from massive Volkov-Pankratov states. Their formation prevents the Dirac point and thus the p-conducting topological surface state from being accessible in transport experiments. This interpretation is supported by low-field magneto-transport experiments demonstrating the coexistence of n-conducting topological surface states and p-conducting Volkov-Pankratov states at the relevant gate voltages.

We have experimentally investigated the effect of electron temperature on transport in the two-dimensional Dirac surface states of the three-dimensional topological insulator HgTe. We have found that around the minimal conductivity point, where both electrons and holes are present, heating the carriers with a DC current results in a nonmonotonic differential resistance of narrow channels. We have shown that the observed initial increase in resistance can be attributed to electron-hole scattering, while the decrease follows naturally from the change in Fermi energy of the charge carriers. Both effects are governed dominantly by a van Hove singularity in the bulk valence band. The results demonstrate the importance of interband electron-hole scattering in the transport properties of topological insulators.

RESUMEN

Quantum spin Hall edge channels hold great promise as dissipationless one-dimensional conductors. However, the ideal quantized conductance of 2e^{2}/h is only found in very short channels-in contradiction with the expected protection against backscattering of the topological insulator state. In this Letter we show that enhancing the band gap does not improve quantization. When we instead alter the potential landscape by charging trap states in the gate dielectric using gate training, we approach conductance quantization for macroscopically long channels. Effectively, the scattering length increases to 175 µm, more than 1 order of magnitude longer than in previous works for HgTe-based quantum wells. Our experiments show that the distortion of the potential landscape by impurities, leading to puddle formation in the narrow gap material, is the major obstacle for observing undisturbed quantum spin Hall edge channel transport.

RESUMEN

A class of two-dimensional (2D) covalent organometallic polymers, with nanometer-scale crosslinking, was obtained by arene(ruthenium) sulfur chemistry. Their ambivalent nature, with positively charged crosslinks and lypophylic branches is the key to the often sought-for and usually hard-to-achieve solubility of 2D polymers in various kinds of solvents. Solubility is here controlled by the planarity of the polymer, which in turn controls Coulomb interactions between the polymer layers. High planarity is achieved for high symmetry crosslinks and short, rigid branches. Owing to their solubility, the polymers are easily processable, and can be handled as powder, deposited on surfaces by mere spin-coating, or suspended across membranes by drop-casting. The novel 2D materials are potential candidates as flexible membranes for catalysis, cancer therapy, and electronics.

At the beginning of their foraging lives, desert ants (Cataglyphis fortis) are for the first time exposed to the visual world within which they henceforth must accomplish their navigational tasks. Their habitat, North African salt pans, is barren, and the nest entrance, a tiny hole in the ground, is almost invisible. Although natural landmarks are scarce and the ants mainly depend on path integration for returning to the starting point, they can also learn and use landmarks successfully to navigate through their largely featureless habitat. Here, we studied how the ants acquire this information at the beginning of their outdoor lives within a nest-surrounding array of three artificial black cylinders. Individually marked 'newcomers' exhibit a characteristic sequence of learning walks. The meandering learning walks covering all directions of the compass first occur only within a few centimeters of the nest entrance, but then increasingly widen, until after three to seven learning walks, foraging starts. When displaced to a distant test field in which an identical array of landmarks has been installed, the ants shift their search density peaks more closely to the fictive goal position, the more learning walks they have performed. These results suggest that learning of a visual landmark panorama around a goal is a gradual rather than an instantaneous process.

RESUMEN

The surface-assisted intramolecular ligand reaction of a porphyrin molecule adsorbed on Au(111) is studied by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. The temperature-induced stepwise transformation of iron octaethylporphyrin proceeds via a concentric electrocyclic ring closure, with the final product iron tetrabenzoporphyrin being identified by its characteristic Kondo resonance. Along with the transformation of the organic ligand, changes in the magnetic fingerprint are observed, indicating an increasing coupling of the iron spin with the substrate electrons.
